Community Cocktails: Montana Bicycle Guild

August 23, 2017

The MBG has a dual mission: (1) to improve, build, and foster Montana’s bicycling community to include the development and promotion of bike riding and community resources in both Helena and Montana, as a whole.  And: (2) to produce world-class mountain bike races in Montana and the surrounding region.  We aim to promote and expand cycling opportunities within our local community of Helena, as well as around the state through trail advocacy and maintenance, community partnerships and collaboration, and state-wide race series development.

The MBG target audience might be best described as the “bike enthusiast” or anyone who may be interested to learn about cycling in the Helena community, and in Montana. Specifically, with Shannon as our newest board member and outreach coordinator, the MBG is making a concerted effort to promote additional activities and initiatives to entice and advocate for more women to participate in the sport of cycling.

Areas Served:
The MBG service area at this point is mainly in the Helena area.  Essentially the purpose of our work is to promote Helena and Montana as a “bike-friendly” place to live, visit, and conduct business.  The Montana Enduro Series (the MBG sponsored race series) is also an effort to promote cycling and stimulate additional local economies.  Each year the MES race series varies in schedule but every year includes Montana locations such as Missoula, Great Falls, Big Sky, Bozeman, Red Lodge, and of course of beloved hometown of Helena.  In addition, we schedule races in the neighboring communities of Alta, Wyoming at Grand Targhee and in Kellogg, Idaho at Silver Mountain Resort.

Impact:
The MBG is proactively and effectively helping to raise the profile of Helena as a biking community therefore aiding and stimulating our local economy. We have development meaningful partnerships with PPLT and Bike Helena in which the MBG is an instrument for trails advocacy and cycling development initiatives within the community.  In addition, the MBG is currently working on a cost-share agreement with the US Forest Service to contract trail maintenance in the Helena area.
